The literacy rate in Uzbekistan is almost 100%. This is due to the fact that secondary education is compulsory. During the 2004/2005 school year there were over 6 million pupils attending 9,835 secondary schools; 757,562 students in professional colleges and 263,576 students at institutes of higher education.
