In the beginning of 2007 the population of Uzbekistan was over 26.7 million, the largest in Central Asia. The ratio of rural to urban population was 63.9% to 36.1%. Uzbekistan is a multinational state with more than 120 nationalities and ethnic groups including Uzbeks (80 percent), Russians (5.5 percent), Tadjiks (5 percent), Kazakhs (3 percent), Karakalpaks (2.5) and others (1.5 percent).
